The Smoking Dangers of Flavored E-Cigarettes
The U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently warned of two new, possibly dangerous side effects from e-juice – vapors and flavors. Most vaporizers use propylene glycol or distilled water to create the flavorings. The thing is that these ingredients may also be toxic when ingested. A recently published study in JAMA demonstrates that both vapors plus some flavors can interfere with someone’s ability to metabolize carbohydrates and lower insulin levels in the blood. Furthermore, e-juices are generally very sweet, causing further complications in those suffering from diabetes. Juice may also contain high degrees of fructose, which can cause erratic behaviour in children and have diuretic properties.
Nicotine is the addictive element found in all e-cigs, tar, nicotine gums, along with other pharmaceutical products. Which means that vaporizing tobacco can increase the risk of developing a dependence to nicotine. The increased risk is doubly heightened for young adults and middle-aged smokers who are already at high risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, and other metabolic complications. It isn’t yet known if the increased risk of cancer will be exacerbated by the increased threat of diabetes.
The FDA cited the danger of nicotine poisoning as you reason it is worried about e-cigarette flavorings. Nicotine is really a poison that can enter the system via skin contact, inhalation, or ingestion. This poisonous material can build up in the body as time passes, causing damage to internal organs and leading to death. Nicotine in addition has been demonstrated to mimic the effects of other drugs like heroin and cocaine. This is particularly dangerous because these addictive substances usually do not cause physical harm, but lead to mental stress and health complications.
Most vaporizers produce smaller amounts of nicotine. Many smokers would rather use these devices rather than other ways of nicotine delivery, like gum or patches. However, there are some disturbing trends about how e-cigarette companies are choosing to use flavorings.
One disturbing factor is the proven fact that companies are including nicotine in foods, such as ice cream, cookies, and even energy drinks. The FDA does not regulate the volume of nicotine present in these products, so they may contain around five milligrams of nicotine. It is unknown whether or not this amount would pose a health risk for a person who is already dependent on cigarettes. A written report released by the American Heart Association estimates that the common smoker is consuming about four packs of cigarettes per day, which translates to about Vape Pen Battery 18 grams of nicotine.
Another danger is that vitamins and minerals found in non-flavored e-juices can actually be absorbed in to the body and provide a source of extra nicotine for vapers. There is also an increased threat of developing lung injury if you are using unflavored e-juices. Although the study didn’t directly connect the e-liquid to lung injury, it viewed two groups of individuals who used a variety of electronic cigarettes: one who had a history of chronic lung injury; and something who was a healthy person but used flavored e-cigs frequently. The group with chronic lung injury had significantly higher levels of vitamin e acetate within their blood compared to the healthy group.
Even though e-liquids have many potential dangers, the most disturbing aspect of all may be the fact that many e-liquids are simply sugar water. In e-juices, the artificial flavorings are added so that you could get “cooler” flavors like fruit or chocolate without paying more for it. In doing so, you are fooling your system into believing that it’s actually enjoying the candy or drink you’re trying to ingest. This is due to the nicotine in these e-liquids is leaner than what would normally be within cigarette smoke, and therefore can cause more serious health issues as time passes than regular smoking.
